IRS online tools guidance

The IRS has a suite of online tools to help practitioners and their clients comply with tax filings and payments. Below are important tools that many tax practitioners use regularly to help their clients with IRS matters.

Tools for practitioners

  • E-Services for Tax Professionals: Perform certain transactions online, such as requesting and receiving client transcripts via the Transcript Delivery System.

  • Modernized e-File (MeF) Program Information: MeF is a web-based system that allows electronic filing of corporate, individual, partnership, exempt and excise tax returns through the Internet.

  • Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN): Request or renew a PTIN online. A PTIN is required if you prepare or help prepare any federal return for compensation.

  • Tax Calendar: Track important business tax dates and deadlines right from your desktop. View due dates and actions for each month. You can see all events or filter them by monthly depositor, semiweekly depositor, excise or general event types.

  • Tax Exempt Organization Search (formerly Select Check): Search for a charity or non-profit organization and find out if it’s eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

Tools for taxpayers (practitioners often help clients use these tools)

  • Direct Pay: Pay a tax bill directly from a checking or savings account or through the IRS2Go mobile application.

  • Get My Payment: Confirm if, and how, the IRS sent a payment (e.g., economic impact payment).

  • Offer-in-Compromise (OIC) Pre-Qualifier: See if a taxpayer is eligible for an OIC. An OIC is an agreement between a taxpayer and the IRS to settle a taxpayer’s debt for less than the full amount owed.

  • Online Payment Agreement: Use this tool to apply for certain types of payment agreements with the IRS, such as an installment agreement/monthly payment plan.

  • View Your Account Information: Securely access individual account information, including balance details by year, payment history and key information from the most recent tax return.

  • Where’s My Amended Return: Track the status of an amended return.

  • Where’s My Refund: Check on the status of a refund.
