    IRS Commissioner Announces New Return Preparer Office at AICPA National Tax Conference

    Speaking at the AICPA's National Tax Conference in Washington, D.C., on October 26, Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Commissioner Doug Shulman revealed some details of the IRS' initiative to register and regulate return preparers and announced the formation of a Return Preparer Office to manage the IRS' return-preparer registration, testing and continuing-education effort. Read this JournalofAccountancy.com article for more information. The IRS also announced its process for foreign return preparers to obtain preparer tax identification numbers.

    AICPA Sr. VP Appointed Steering Committee Chair at XBRL International

    During its October meeting in Beijing, XBRL International (XII) announced that Arleen Thomas, CPA, the AICPA's senior vice president-member competency and development, was elected chair of the XII International Steering Committee for 2011. "I am passionate about the role of the International Steering Committee as a critical component of the governance of XII and as a voice for the membership," she stated.     The Small Business Jobs Act of 2010 offers a number of key benefits to businesses of all sizes and includes some revenue raisers as well. To help you learn more about this important legislation, the AICPA has created a special webpage. We’ll continue to post new content, so check back often. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the Act’s provisions and deadlines in order to take full advantage of these opportunities. Additionally, the AICPA and the U.S. Labor Department launched a website, Choosing a Retirement Solution for Your Small Business, which is designed to help small businesses pick appropriate retirement plans for employees.

    Statements on Responsibilities in a PFP Practice Webinar

    Join this session on November 4, 1 - 2 p.m. Eastern, to learn the history of the Statements on Responsibilities (SORs), who will benefit from using these SORs, the minimum guidelines for professional behavior as a CPA financial planner, how to practically apply these guidelines in practice as well as de facto standards considerations. The PFP Executive Committee has issued the SORs in PFP to provide guidance to the CPA financial planner in applying the highest levels of integrity, professionalism and competence in the delivery of personal financial planning services so as to serve the best interests of the public, regardless of the form of the member’s practice.     New AICPA Membership Logos Available for Your Use
    AICPA membership logos and web stickers for each of the six membership categories are now available for download in the CPA Marketing Toolkit. Use the logo in your advertising, brochures, stationery and business cards, signs, websites and other promotional materials. Be sure to read the FAQ for all the specifics on usage. As a reminder, members are not permitted to use the standard AICPA logo - for liability reasons, only the AICPA can use that version of the logo.
