New Orleans (May 15, 2016) – The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) has recognized New Orleans native Stephen G. Romig, CPA, with its 2015 Public Service Award for Individuals. This award honors an individual who has demonstrated outstanding public service activities from among a select field of candidates, each of whom have been nominated by AICPA members or state societies across the country.

“The strong candidates nominated for the Public Service Award made it difficult to provide our outside judges with a short list of the people most deserving of this honor. It is a tribute to those in our profession that so many CPAs dedicate significant amounts of their time to their communities,” said James Curry, CPA, chair of the AICPA’s awards committee, who presented the award at the spring meeting of the Institute’s Governing Council in New Orleans. “While we salute the achievements of all of our members, the judges determined that Steve’s work in the New Orleans community places him on top. He is a credit to his city and the CPA profession.”

Romig is an advisory director of the tax services department for LaPorte CPAs & Business Advisors in Metairie, La. He previously served as the firm’s managing director. Over the last 35 years, Romig has provided business consulting and tax planning services for law firms and family owned and managed businesses. Services include compensation consulting, profitability improvement, succession planning and talent acquisition. His experience also includes forensic accounting services and expert witness testimony.

Public service has been a hallmark of Romig’s life. Every Monday you will find him at the Harry Tompson Center in New Orleans, coordinating services for the homeless and–most importantly—serving as a patient listener to their stories and challenges. Romig’s other community service includes volunteer work at the Good Shepherd School in New Orleans, where he has tutored at-risk children and helped them with test preparation.

Romig is the recipient of the 2015 Distinguished Service Award from the Society of Louisiana Certified Public Accountants, 2013 Class Young Leadership Role Model Award and the 2013 Class New Orleans CityBusiness Moneymakers Award. Romig earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting from the University of New Orleans. He lives in New Orleans.
