New York, N.Y. (August 17, 2016)
– The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) is offering a free four-part webcast series aimed at providing the information needed to create inclusive workplace environments in the accounting profession. The AICPA believes that a culture of inclusion leads to increased employee retention, high levels of engagement and  better business relations in an increasingly diverse multicultural marketplace.

The Workplace Inclusion webcast series builds upon an earlier series which addressed unconscious bias, and is open to AICPA members and the public. The first part of this four-part webcast series will be held on Thursday, Aug. 18, from 1-2 p.m.  ET.

“Inclusive work environments result in an engaged and high performing workforce, which in turn create high performing organizations,” said Anthony Newkirk, Sr. manager, Diversity Initiatives at AICPA.“This webcast series is will help people understand why creating inclusive environments is a business imperative and give them the skills they need to be change agents in their own organizations.”

The series begins by providing an understanding of what diversity and inclusion means and builds off that knowledge to explain the importance of diversity and inclusion from a business standpoint.

Current trends indicate the continued growth of minorities in the U.S., and their increasing influence on the U.S. economy.  For instance, the most recent U.S. Census found minority-owned businesses increased receipts to $1.4 trillion between 2007 and 2012, an increase of 34.7 percent. This influence on the economy will continue to increase as the U.S. population grows more diverse. According to the U.S. Census, more than 50 percent of all Americans are projected to belong to a minority group by 2044.

The AICPA’s National Commission on Diversity and Inclusion, which is hosting the webcast series, is a profession-wide effort lead by the AICPA to encourage and promote diversity and inclusion within the accounting profession and create workplaces that are better reflective of the communities that they serve.
