AICPA Partners with SCORE to Support National White House Initiative

New Program Expands Access to Advice and Tools for Veterans and Their Families

April 12, 2011

Washington, D.C. (April 12, 2011) — The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and SCORE, America’s premier source of free and confidential small business advice for entrepreneurs, in support of First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces Initiative, have committed to providing mentoring, tools and training support to military personnel and their families through the new “Veterans Fast Launch” program.

Joining Forces is a comprehensive national initiative to mobilize all sectors of society to give service members and their families the opportunities and support they have earned. In this ongoing effort, the First Lady and Dr. Biden will highlight issues that are of special importance to the military families they have met with across the country, including the areas of employment, education, and wellness.

As part of the initiative, the AICPA, SCORE, the WalMart Foundation, Intacct and other technology partners have joined to create the “Veterans Fast Launch” program. The new program will be a package of services, scholarships and free software combined with SCORE’s mentoring program. The aim is to help veterans, their spouses and families succeed as small business owners.

As part of the Fast Launch program, the AICPA will connect veterans with CPAs across the country for up to 5 hours of free financial advice on starting a business. Veterans can visit to learn more about the comprehensive tax- and financial-planning services that America’s CPAs provide entrepreneurs, to connect with a CPA or to find additional free resources designed to help veterans manage their finances.

“We are honored to join with the First Lady, Dr. Biden and other partners on this initiative, which stands to create powerful opportunities for our veterans and the local communities their businesses serve,” said Barry Melancon, the AICPA’s president and CEO. “Our involvement underscores the CPA profession’s longstanding commitment to entrepreneurs and to members of our armed forces. We look forward to helping make the Fast Launch initiative and the veterans who participate successful.”

In addition to their extensive education and training, CPAs have robust resources available to assist veterans. They include materials available through an AICPA partnership with the U.S. Small Business Administration and financial education information tailored to the unique needs of veterans on, the profession’s financial literacy initiative.

“SCORE is thrilled to take part in this White House initiative and to work together toward a common goal of providing support and resources to our service members and their families,” says SCORE CEO Ken Yancey. “This new program gives SCORE, and its partners, the opportunity to offer free business advice and tools to aid in the successful transition of our nation’s veterans and their families to small business ownership.”
