In Kelli Grant’s January 28 article Be prepared: It’s tax-return fraud season, AICPA Senior Technical Manager Melanie Lauridsen said, “People see something from the IRS and they start to freak out.  Panic sets in instead of thinking through things rationally.”  Lauridsen reminded CNBC readers that the IRS has repeatedly said its first contact with taxpayers is by regular mail – not with an email or a phone call.  Nor, she said, will the threat of a lawsuit or arrest be a first, second or third course of action by the IRS.
