Making 2022 count — advice from the AICPA chair

3 months ago · 2 min read · AICPA Insights Blog

Going into 2021, we were all hoping for a return to normalcy, to put the pandemic behind us and to be able to place our focus on rebuilding and coming back strong. However, 2021 had other ideas. And it seems reasonable that, at this point, most of us are cautious about what 2022 may bring for us, our firms and businesses, our clients and our profession.

As we prepare for the year ahead, it’s important to remember that, despite the uncertainty, you all overcame unimaginable challenges and made extraordinary accomplishments in the past two years. Thanks to your continued leadership, determination and hard work, you provided clients, organizations, businesses and communities trusted guidance to help them recover. Your work has been, and will continue to be, crucial to economic recovery.

Adaptation was a defining feature of 2021 as we settled into the rhythms of a pandemic world. This year, I believe we can turn our attention more fully to thriving in 2022.

To do this in the current environment, investment in people — in all capacities — will be paramount. If you are not doing this already, this process can start within your firms and businesses, and with yourself.

Committing to learning, unlearning and relearning is essential to staying agile and ahead of trends. The Association of International Certified Professional Accountants® is uniquely positioned to provide learning to address the skills gap and advance the profession. For example, join the AICPA Town Hall webcasts, a regular broadcast series that offers late-breaking, critical and pertinent information to help you adapt to change. In this digital world, technological skills have never been more important. Ensure that your organization remains competitive and that your employees have the needed tools by investing in digital technologies and training. The Association offers a variety of technology training, including the AICPA & CIMA Digital Mindset Pack.

While it is important to develop particular skill sets, it’s also important to foster an inclusive environment and capitalize on the talents of every individual. Driving progress will also include implementing diversity, equity and inclusion efforts to bring in a variety of perspectives and backgrounds.

As accounting professionals, we’ve always known the importance of a robust pipeline, but 2020 and 2021 have demonstrated how important it is for us to maintain our connection to it. Talent building, mentorship programs and outreach will also help you invest in the next generation of accountants. That’s why our organization is committed to growing the accounting profession through our CPA Evolution initiative, which ensures that the CPA profession remains trusted, resilient and thriving.

Just as you are committed to charting a path forward, the Association is too. We have continued our enhanced advocacy efforts in response to the pandemic while representing members’ interests to governments worldwide. Through 2022 — and beyond — we will continue to lead robust advocacy efforts to protect the accounting profession and the wider public in the wake of disruption.

While I may not be able to predict the future, I know that we’re stronger and more likely to succeed when we work together. We’ve seen that in our organization, with the AICPA® & CIMA® coming together through the Association to tackle even the most complex problems. Lean on your colleagues and friends. Lean on the Association — you have our support, and we are continually creating new resources to help you succeed. We need people like you to help us make the profession thrive in 2022 and demonstrate the value it brings to so many.
