AICPA Announces Winners of 2018 'Bank On It' Tournaments

Online Learning and Gamification Combine to Engage Students in Accounting Fundamentals

NEW YORK (October 30, 2018) – The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) is pleased to announce the three high school students who have won Bank On It® tournaments held at business and finance education conferences earlier this year. Bank On It is an interactive online game which challenges students’ knowledge of accounting fundamentals and gives them a taste of real-world work scenarios that play out every day in the profession.

The winners of this year’s live AICPA-hosted tournaments include:

  • Kris Floriano from California, who bested a field of participants from 16 schools to win a Bank On It Tournament at NAF Next 2018 in Washington, D.C.

  • Bryson Lyons from Idaho, who earned the top spot in a field of 75 at the Business Professionals of America Conference in Dallas, Texas. Lyons also won in 2017.

  • Isaac Kisten from New York, who finished first in a tournament of 64 at the Future Business Leaders of America Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

“Bank On It helps high school teachers get their students excited about accounting,” said Yvonne Hinson, CPA, CGMA, Ph.D., academic in residence for the Association of International Certified Professional Accountants. “The game utilizes students’ critical thinking skills and helps them to dive deep into accounting concepts. And it does so in a more fun and engaging way than simply memorizing and repeating information from a textbook. On behalf of the AICPA, I want to congratulate this year’s winning students for demonstrating an impressive grasp on the fundamentals of accounting.”

More than 84,000 high school students have participated in more than 1,600 Bank On It tournaments in classrooms to date. The game features over 2,200 questions grouped by public accounting, business and industry, or non-profit accounting. The questions were inspired by content in accounting textbooks as well as real life scenarios from the profession, and they are reviewed by CPAs. When students answer questions incorrectly, the game provides explanations to reinforce principles that are taught in the classroom.

The game also offers a financial literacy version which covers topics such as balancing a checkbook, understanding credit scores and student loans.

Educators who are interested in using the game as an instructional tool can register through AICPA’s Start Here, Go Places website, which has a variety of teaching resources such as class activities and virtual field trips. Once teachers receive their Bank On It classroom codes, they can track students’ success through the site. Students have the option to play against their classmates, online players or the computer.
