2024 PCPS George Willie Internship & Scholarship Program

2 months ago · 1 min read

Firms of all sizes understand the case for diversity but many face challenges in acquiring ethnically diverse talent.

CPA firms of all sizes understand the business case for developing a diverse team. But many firms are challenged to recruit, retain and develop talent from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

The AICPA Private Companies Practice Section (PCPS), in collaboration with the member-facing DEI team, is connecting PCPS firms with talented accounting majors from ethnically diverse backgrounds. Participating in this program requires firms to provide a student with an internship which in turn provides the student an opportunity to engage with a public accounting firm and the accounting profession as a whole. Firms serve as the entry point to practical experience and exposure which are both critical success factors in increasing ethnic diversity in the profession.

The program also showcases firms’ commitments to not only recruiting diverse talent, but also understanding how to effectively integrate staff from different backgrounds into their cultures while also ensuring that they feel a sense of belonging and support along the way.

As an additional measure of our support, PCPS is awarding up to $10,000 of financial assistance to each student to support their ultimate entry into the profession.

How the scholarship/internship works

  • Your firm applies to serve as a cosponsoring firm that provides an internship to the student during busy season 2024 (January–April)

  • The accounting student applies for consideration for the George Willie Ethnically Diverse Scholarship & Internship (application opens in February 2023)

  • AICPA PCPS selects ten firms* to host an intern and ten students, who will receive both the internship and be awarded up to $10,000 per student towards their tuition

(*Note: Although 10 firms will participate in the 2024 cohort, PCPS will only select 5 additional firms due to ongoing commitments.)

To apply, you can find the application here.

Applications are due January 15, 2023.

If you know a student from an ethnically diverse background pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in an accounting or accounting-related major who is interested in an internship in early 2024, tell them about this and to check backin February 2023 to apply. Email diversity@aicpa.org to request a notification when the student applications are open.
