Welcome from the New Director

September 25, 2015

I was recently named the newest Director – Taxation for the AICPA and want to take a moment to introduce myself to our Tax Section members. First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you for being a member. Regardless of whether you are a lifetime member or have just started to get involved, I believe you are at the heart of what we do each day.

As such, it is my mission to deliver on our promise to provide value for that membership as well as to seek opportunities to improve your member experience wherever possible.

A little about me....

I began my journey into the tax field while attending college in the early 90’s in Phoenix when I answered an ad seeking a receptionist for a CPA firm during tax season. One of my duties was to key the data from the input sheets completed by the CPAs into the one computer in the office. As tax season went along I found myself seeing patterns, catching mistakes, and realizing that while these clients had similar situations, the results on their returns could vary largely.

After tax season was over I was offered a position by a tax practitioner in the same office complex. She prided herself on being a tax expert and was meticulous in her work, paying attention to every detail. She took the time to teach me the fundamentals behind the work and in doing so lit a spark in me that burns on to this day.

Over the course of my career I have had the benefit of working in CPA firms of all sizes. Each experience, whether good or bad (and believe me, there were plenty of bad ones), has engrained in me a lesson that shapes my thoughts and actions to this day. I utilized all of those experiences when I started my own tax practice in Austin in 2006, and while I had the benefit of all of that knowledge, I still struggled with many of the same things all small practitioners face when starting and running a practice.

It is a culmination of my experiences, my successes, my mistakes and the risk I took as an entrepreneur while realizing my family’s future was on the line, that I believe will add the most value to my new role here at the AICPA. While I have seen great improvements to the Tax Section and AICPA tax resources overall in recent years, I know we can make it even better.

My goal, and the goal of our entire team, is to continue the good work we have started, as well as to seek opportunities to improve the member experience. So, if you or your team members are not actively utilizing your Tax Section membership, I encourage you to learn more about the benefits. A good starting place would be to visit our website and take a tour of the new structure that our team has created.

I am delighted at being able to join you on this journey and I look forward to our bright future!
