The Lean and Environment Toolkit is one of four toolkits available from the EPA’s Lean Manufacturing and the Environment website. This toolkit assembles practical experience collected by the EPA from partner organizations and is intended to help companies improve both their business performance and environmental performance by eliminating environmental wastes at their organizations.
The toolkit provides guidance for applying Lean strategies and techniques to environmental considerations – learning how to see hidden environmental wastes and hazards, enhancing the effectiveness of lean implementation, and delivering what customers and employees want.
Chapters of the Toolkit dedicated to lean techniques of Value Stream Mapping, Kaizen Events, and 6S (5S+ Safety) include step-by-step instruction, illustrations, and case examples. The concluding chapter addresses implementation strategies. Appendices include additional information on lean methods, basic environmental measures and a lean event EHS checklist.
