CPAs Go to Capitol Hill to Discuss Important National Issues

The Spring 2012 Council meeting was held in Washington, D.C. this week, giving CPAs, state CPA societies and AICPA leadership an opportunity to visit with federal legislators to discuss issues important to the profession, business and the public. AICPA Federal Key Persons and Council members met with their members of Congress the morning of May 16, focusing on two thought leadership issues: Total Tax Insights, a first-of-a-kind tool offered free by the CPA profession to give taxpayers a clearer picture of the types of taxes they pay and their full estimated tax obligation, and What’s at Stake?, a video program offering guidance on how the U.S. government’s financial statements can be used for greater understanding of the nation’s fiscal health. These initiatives continue to support CPAs as America’s premier tax professionals and demonstrate the profession’s goal to help improve transparency in financial reporting.

Pathways Commission Provides Update on Education Recommendations

The U.S. Department of the Treasury Advisory Committee on the Auditing Profession identified in its October 2008 report several recommendations, including the importance for the American Accounting Association and the AICPA to form a commission to study the future structure and content of accounting education. William F. Ezzell, CPA, CGMA, commissioner of the Pathways Commission and a former AICPA Chairman of the Board of Directors, gave an update on the commission’s progress and upcoming recommendations for change in accounting education. The Pathways Commission report will be released later this summer. For more information on the Pathways Commission, visit AICPA.org.
