Dave and Sue Tylcoat’s home page includes a glossary of unusual words found in wills from the 16th and 17th centuries. Some terms are no longer in use today—for example, backsyde was a “backyard…attached to a dwelling.” Among the terms that are still current is bailiff, which referred to the “manorial lord’s representative and estate manager.”
