Winner of the 2001 Joint AICPA/AAA
Collaboration Award
The AICPA and AAA have presented the
2001 award to The Role of Community Service in a
For-Profit Organization, which due to the work of
both academics and professionals, advance both the
teaching and practice of accounting. The winner was
announced at the AAA Annual Meeting and the award was
presented to its lead academic partner, Dr. Jay C.
Thibodeau.
The Role of Community Service in
a For-Profit Organization is an innovative new
course being offered at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass.
During the academic year 2000/2001, Bentley College,
KPMG, and Junior Achievement partnered in delivering this
new course. The course provides accounting students with
an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge, gain
hands-on practical experience in a public accounting
firm, and implement a service-learning project that made
a positive community impact. The courses learning
objectives explicitly include developing students
professional and business etiquette skills. The course
combines various pedagogies to accomplish its goals.
Specifically, it consists of:
- A skills training session
facilitated by accounting professionals;
- A one-week externship experience
in a firm;
- An academic component with
required readings and classroom discussions led
by faculty experts in the corporate
responsibility field; and
- A service-learning project.
The course effectively combines an
active field-based learning environment with the
traditional academic setting to create an extraordinary
educational experience for students.
