Winner of the 2001 Joint AICPA/AAA Collaboration Award

The AICPA and AAA have presented the 2001 award to “The Role of Community Service in a For-Profit Organization,” which due to the work of both academics and professionals, advance both the teaching and practice of accounting. The winner was announced at the AAA Annual Meeting and the award was presented to its lead academic partner, Dr. Jay C. Thibodeau.

“The Role of Community Service in a For-Profit Organization” is an innovative new course being offered at Bentley College in Waltham, Mass. During the academic year 2000/2001, Bentley College, KPMG, and Junior Achievement partnered in delivering this new course. The course provides accounting students with an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge, gain hands-on practical experience in a public accounting firm, and implement a service-learning project that made a positive community impact. The course’s learning objectives explicitly include developing students’ professional and business etiquette skills. The course combines various pedagogies to accomplish its goals. Specifically, it consists of:

  • A skills training session facilitated by accounting professionals;
  • A one-week externship experience in a firm;
  • An academic component with required readings and classroom discussions led by faculty experts in the corporate responsibility field; and
  • A service-learning project.

The course effectively combines an active field-based learning environment with the traditional academic setting to create an extraordinary educational experience for students.

Participating academics and practitioners in this winning project are:

  • Dorothy Feldmann, Bentley College
  • Robert Koulish, Bentley College
  • Karen K. Osterheld, Bentley College
