Vipal Monga reports in The Wall Street Journal’s CFO Journal that the valuation profession is getting a new standard. The American Institute of CPAs, the American Society of Appraisers and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors will be offering a new Certified in Entity and Intangible Valuations credential to attest to the expertise of people who earn a living valuing patents, trademarks and customer relationships for companies. For an increasing number of companies, much of the value of a business is wrapped up in intangibles, such as patents or brand names. U.S. companies could be carrying more than $8 trillion of intangible assets on their balance sheets, according to an estimate last year by Leonard Nakamura, an economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia.
