Sale of Real Estate Investments Held by Employee Benefit Plans and Discontinued Operations 

Many employee benefit plans invest directly in real estate (for example, a building) that generates rental income and operating expenses for the plan. Generally, these plans are defined benefit plans but certain defined contribution plans may also hold these investments. 

The AICPA issued TPA 6930.05 - Sale of real estate investments held by employee benefit plans and discontinued operations, to clarify whether, in situations where an employee benefit plan invests in real estate that generates rental income and operating expenses for the plan and then sells that property, the sale of the real estate investment is considered a discontinued operation of the plan.
