Bill is the senior vice president of research and policy analysis and chief economist for the Credit Union National Association (CUNA). The research and policy analysis department performs market research for credit unions and state credit union leagues, maintains a comprehensive financial database on credit unions, and conducts a variety of research on financial and economic issues of interest to the credit union movement. Bill joined the department as an economist in 1978, promoted to vice president in 1985, and appointed senior vice president in 1992. Additionally, Hampel writes economic analysis columns that appear in several credit union publications. An expert on the economy and credit union issues, he is regularly interviewed for stories on national news outlets, including Bloomberg TV and Radio, The Wall Street Journal, MarketWatch, The Associated Press, CNBC, Reuters, CNN, SmartMoney, Dow Jones News Service, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine, and USA Today, among others. Billl is a member of the American Economic Association and the National Association for Business Economists, and holds a doctorate in economics from Iowa State University.
