Special Edition: Update from AICPA Chairman Kimberly Ellison-Taylor
Dear fellow AICPA member,

This year promises to be more dynamic than previous years, and we expect that the work you do advising clients and businesses will be even more complex. We are committed to enabling you with more support and resources to navigate the year ahead, and this letter highlights a few of those areas.

In Washington, we are ramping up efforts to represent the public interest and keep you informed on policy changes and their impact as our new president and Congress act on tax, healthcare, trade and other key agenda items. We have already launched a dedicated online resource where you can review the latest news, information and insight on proposed and passed tax law changes.

You will also see new tools to assess and advise on a rapidly growing risk — cybersecurity — and new efforts to help you understand and anticipate emerging technologies that create both opportunities and challenges for our business models, as well as the services we offer. The talent pipeline absolutely remains front and center with an update to the Uniform CPA Examination that emphasizes critical thinking and analytical ability. You’ll also see innovative promotion of the profession - including an exciting collaboration with DreamWorks Animation that showcases our work in financial literacy.

We will increase our international advocacy as well. The new Association of International Certified Professional Accountants (the Association), which members approved with 86.5 percent support in June, officially launched this month. It brings together the expertise and capabilities of the American Institute of CPAs and The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants to benefit you and the entire profession — both public and management accounting — with enhanced resources and an even stronger voice in advocacy. As a reminder, you will remain a member of the AICPA — AND you will also have automatic membership in the Association. Dual membership will complement our unwavering commitment to protect, promote and grow the CPA.

The Association is making demonstrated progress on this goal. Just last week, we took a stand against mandatory audit firm rotation in South Africa on behalf of the 650,000 professional accountants and students it represents. The Association is also preparing to offer more insight on major global events like the U.K.’s pending exit from the European Union and any trade, tax and currency implications for the clients, firms and companies our members serve.

Please look for more information about the Association in the coming weeks, including a new website that underscores our profession’s relevance in a volatile world and a vibrant new look that conveys the dynamic role of CPAs and CGMAs.

I am extremely proud to be a CPA and CGMA leading a profession that anticipates and stays ahead of the forces shaping our world. We look forward to working on behalf of the public interest and helping you succeed even more in the year ahead.

Sincerely,

Kimberly N. Ellison-Taylor, CPA, CGMA
Chairman, American Institute of CPAs
