AICPA Participated in Former U.S. Comptroller General's Event to Encourage Federal Fiscal Reform

The AICPA worked with the North Carolina Association of CPAs and the North Carolina Chamber for the Oct. 5 Raleigh, N.C., stop of Comeback America Initiative’s $10 Million A Minute Tour. During the event, former U.S. Comptroller General David Walker spoke about the need for fiscally responsible reforms to ensure a sound economy for future generations in the United States. Since September, Walker has been traveling across the country to promote proposed, non-partisan changes in budgeting, taxes and politics. Read this Journal of Accountancy article for more information. Earlier this year, the Institute released What's at Stake? A CPA's Insights into the Federal Government's Finances, to offer guidance for policymakers and the public on how the U.S. government's financial statements can be used for greater understanding of the nation's fiscal health.

    Reminder for Foreign Asset Filing

The AICPA reminds members who have clients with extended returns due Oct. 15 about the new 2011 filing season requirement under code section 6038D that requires individuals to report information on Form 8938, Statement of Specified Foreign Financial Assets, as part of their income tax return with respect to specified foreign financial assets. Just because a taxpayer filed Form TD F 90.22-1, Report of Foreign Bank and Financial Account, does not exempt him or her from filing Form 8938 under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act. View the 2011 filing thresholds for Form 8938 regarding certain foreign assets.
