    Published May 23, 2011

WASHINGTON, DC  (May 23, 2011) – The governing Council of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants voted unanimously today to approve an agreement with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants to create a new Chartered Global Management Accountant designation for professional management accountants worldwide.

With the “Yes” vote by Council, the AICPA will create a joint venture with London-based CIMA that will be backed by global resources and experience in management accounting and business.

“This is a gratifying ratification by our governing Council of the strategic vision we have set for the Institute’s future global role,” said AICPA President and CEO Barry Melancon. “This joint venture with CIMA will significantly enhance the knowledge and training we offer our U.S. members in management accounting while the new CGMA designation will recognize and support top-quality management accounting professionals worldwide.”

The AICPA’s governing Council is made up of 262 members representing CPAs in all 50 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, and Guam. The Council meets twice a year and approves AICPA policies and procedures. The current meeting is taking place in Washington, D.C.
