The House Financial Services Committee approved a bill that exempts CPAs who provide services to municipal governments from having to register with the Securities and Exchange Commission as municipal advisers. A wide variety of views over what should be included in the auditor’s report emerged during an International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board round table on Sept. 10. The IAASB has proposed that “auditor commentary” should highlight matters that the auditor believes are likely to be most important to users’ understanding of the audited financial statements. The AICPA has announced the creation of the National Commission on Diversity to serve as champions of diversity within the accounting profession. The formation of the Commission reflects a renewed focus on diversity within the profession to match the changing marketplace and shifting demographics. The Commission is charged with developing strategies to increase the retention and advancement of underrepresented minorities in the accounting profession, and engaging members and the profession in this dialogue.
