Published November 16, 2016

Washington, D.C., (Nov. 16, 2016) – Jeffrey A. Porter, CPA is the recipient of the 2016 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest honor bestowed by the accounting profession in the area of taxation.  The award, given by the Tax Division of the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), was presented today at the AICPA Fall Tax Division Meeting in Washington, D.C. by Edward S. Karl, CPA, CGMA, AICPA vice president of taxation.

Porter is the founder and owner of Porter & Associates, CPA in Huntington, W.V., which concentrates in tax planning and business advisory services for small- to medium-sized businesses and high net worth individuals.  He is a frequent lecturer and has taught tax related continuing education courses for a number of state CPA societies, local and national firms and the AICPA National Tax Conference.

Porter has been a dedicated AICPA volunteer for nearly 30 years.  He currently serves on the AICPA’s Board of Directors and its Governing Council and as chair of the AICPA Tax Reform Task Force.  Porter has served multiple years on the AICPA Tax Executive Committee, including as the committee’s chair.  While chair of the Tax Executive Committee, Porter fought to protect CPAs during the tax preparer regulation changes and IRS service reductions.  He has testified often at House and Senate hearings.  In addition, he has served as chair of the Tax Practice Management Committee and as the Tax Education Committee.  Among other AICPA tax panels on which Porter has served are the IRS Advocacy and Relations Committee and the Tax Simplification Committee.

Outside of the tax profession, Porter has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the United Methodist Foundation of West Virginia and is currently serving as its chair.  He was appointed by the Governor of West Virginia to the Board of Governors for the Mountwest Community & Technical College as well as to the West Virginia Lottery Commission where he also served as chair.

Porter holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from Marshall University and a Masters of Taxation from The University of Tulsa.

The AICPA’s annual award is in honor of Arthur J. Dixon, a CPA who had an outstanding record of service to the tax profession and to the Institute’s Tax Division.  Dixon was chairman of the AICPA's Tax Executive Committee from 1977 to 1980 and posthumously won the first award named in his honor.  The award was established after his death in 1981 to honor outstanding CPAs in the area of taxes.
