In May 2010, the AICPA governing Council unanimously voted to ballot its members on a proposed bylaw amendment. Ballots were mailed to members in August and were due to an independent tabulator at the close of business on October 8, ET. Members of the AICPA who cast ballots voted by an 81.39% majority to pass the measure. A two-thirds majority of those voting was required. Votes totaled 86,484 with 70,388 voting "yes" and 16,096 voting "no." Individuals now can apply for membership if they at any time possessed a valid CPA certificate and the certificate was not revoked as a result of disciplinary action. In addition, accounting professionals who have fulfilled the Uniform Accountancy Act’s requirements for CPA certification – 150 hours of education, passage of the CPA Exam and at least one year of work experience – may become voting members of the AICPA. The AICPA will begin taking applications for those eligible under the new provisions beginning in late December. See the Membership section of AICPA.org for more information at that time.
