What's Hot for AICPA Tax Advocacy in 2012?
Form 1099-K (credit card transaction reporting) and foreign asset reporting (FATCA and FBAR) are among the issues that the AICPA Tax Division is preparing to offer comments on. Read this latest blog by Tax Advocacy Director Melissa Labant to see what else we are doing to express members' concerns to policy makers regarding the impacts of rules and regulations.
Proposed FATCA Regulations Released!
Treasury and the IRS released regulations to govern how foreign financial institutions (FFIs) need to report accounts held by US taxpayers. The regulations lay out a step-by-step process for U.S. account identification, information reporting, and withholding requirements for FFIs, other foreign entities, and U.S. withholding agents. A public hearing will be held May 15.
Practice Standard Interpretations for Returns & Tax Planning Are Now Effective
The AICPA recognizes members' need for adequate guidance for providing tax planning services - Interpretation 1-2 helps clarify existing standards and how those standards would apply across the spectrum of tax planning. SSTS 1-1 gives numerous examples of situations involving government disclosure standards to clarify the practitioner's responsibility.

Some relief from penalties will be available for those required to report actions that affected their stock basis during calendar year 2011.

National Taxpayer Advocate Nina Olsen told Congress that funding shortages and over reliance on automation are big issues facing taxpayers. Automatic corrections to returns that prove to be incorrect can be difficult to fix.

Offshore Voluntary Disclosure Program reopened for indefinite period. More information to be released by IRS in next month.

2011 Tax Practice Guides and Checklists 
The wait is over! Our annual Tax Practice Guides and Checklists for the 2011 tax year are now available.  In addition to the Word and PDF versions, we now offer a new online verson - the Interactive Tax Checklists - for todays' digital CPA.  Like the Word and PDF versions, this new interactive tool is free to Tax Section members.  This resource alone is worth the cost of joining the Tax Section.

Tax Practitioners Toolkit: Communicate Your Value
