Melody lives in Fairbanks, Alaska, where she enjoys winters at a steamy 40 below with almost four hours of sunlight, and summers at a cool 90 degrees with 24-hours of daylight. Her passion for accounting began when she was nine years old when she was thrilled by the magic of the bank reconciliation. She knew then that accounting was for her, and has pursued that passion energetically ever since. She became a partner at age 30, and is now the sole proprietor of Feniks & Company, LLC a small firm which specializes in broad-spectrum support of closely-held businesses, non-profit entities and individuals.
Melody began service for the AICPA as a member of the PCPS Executive Committee in 2010, and is currently Chair of its Member Services Committee. This service provides her with an opportunity to explore and address a variety of special topics important to the profession, including women’s initiatives, Trusted Business Advisor development and presentation programs, the importance of small firms to the industry, and mentorship of colleagues seeking to develop or enrich their practices. She is a Past President of the Alaska Society of CPAs, chaired its Ethics Committee, and served as Liaison to the Alaska Board of Public Accountancy on behalf of the Society. The Alaska Society recognized her service with their Distinguished Service Award and Public Service Award. Melody became a Trustee for the University of Alaska Foundation in 2009, and has chaired the Foundation’s Finance and Audit Committee since 2012. She also volunteers in organizations such as Rotary Club and serves on local non-profit boards from time to time.
When it’s not tax season, Melody cooks, bakes, rides her road bike, sews, watches Pixar movies, gardens, picks wild blueberries, goes for rides in her friend’s Cessna, and takes her English Labrador for long swims.
