A financial analyst (or securities or research analyst) researches economic conditions and company fundamentals to make business, sector and industry recommendations, including whether to buy or sell a company’s stock. Analysts typically work for commercial banks, investment banks, insurance companies and investment firms.
“Buy-side” analysts work for investing firms such as mutual funds, pension funds and insurance companies and provide research and recommendations exclusively for the company’s own money managers.
“Sell-side” analysts work for investment firms and provide research and recommendations to the firm’s clients and buy-side firms.
