Hurricane Relief—The Profession Responds

All of us at the AICPA share the deep sadness and concern the entire nation feels over the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina and the additional damage caused by Rita. Our hearts go out to the hundreds of thousands of Americans whose lives have been forever changed, including the thousands of AICPA members and their families living in areas affected by this disaster.

The CPA profession has responded to this crisis in a very decisive way. We are determined to bring to bear our expertise regarding financial matters to help the victims. The AICPA has also launched a number of initiatives to support our members in this extraordinary time.

This central, online resource is the comprehensive source for all our efforts. We are recommending that members visit this page frequently for up-to-date information, useful links to other Web sites and a wide range of practical tools on this topic.

Weve divided our resources into several categories which are listed below:

The News Center is where youll find the latest information about AICPA and state society activities, regulatory changes and the professions work in the recovery effort.

How You Can Help is where CPAs from around the country can find ways to pitch in to offer the victims of this natural disaster. This section includes links on where to contribute money or volunteer your time in the general recovery effort. It also talks about specific programs the profession has put in place where you can bring your CPA skills to bear in helping businesses and individuals to get their financial and work lives going again.

The Firm Volunteer Center is where CPAs are reaching out to their fellow CPAs. Established by the Institutes Private Company Practice Section (PCPS), the Firm Volunteer Center matches those that can help by providing office space, office supplies, technology support, hosting of email servers, help with critical filings, support in reaching clients and even temporary employment or housing to Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, Texas and Mississippi CPAs.

Business Recovery Resources is where CPAs can find tools that they can use to assist their clients and employers as they rebuild in the wake of disaster. There are links here to guidebooks, case studies, checklists and other information on technology recovery, insurance issues, general business issues and more.
