CPA Governmental Employees Hear from AICPA Chairman at Conference

William E. BalhoffAmerican Institute of CPAs (AICPA) Chairman William E. Balhoff, CPA, CGMA, CFF kicked off the AICPA National Governmental Accounting and Auditing Update in Washington, D.C. in August with a presentation discussing some of the Institute’s legislative and regulatory advocacy initiatives.  Approximately 400 CPAs attended the conference, and about 55 percent were federal, state or local government employees.

In recent years, legislative proposals have sought to restrict federal employees’ access to in-person continuing professional education events sponsored by non-profit professional organizations like the Institute. The conference – designed to educate participants about a variety of changes in governmental accounting and federal compliance issues affecting governmental entities – is an example of the type of event the AICPA has encouraged Congress to continue to permit federal employees to attend or speak at. 

Balhoff was joined at the conference by guest speakers including David A. Vaudt, chairman of the Governmental Accounting Standards Board; Tom Allen, chairman of the Federal Accounting Standards Advisory Board; the Inspectors General from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Defense, and officials from the Office of Management and Budget, U.S. Government Accountability Office, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, the Internal Revenue Service and the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
